Ocean day today – all month long

The United Nations General Assembly designated today, June 8 as “World Ocean Day,” acknowledging a tradition set forth in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

In 2002 – a decade later, the National Marine Sanctuaries Foundation began sponsoring their annual Capitol Hill Ocean Week in the second week of June. During this week ocean stakeholders come to Washington and participate in a week-long legislative forum focused on ocean issues.

Not to be left out of the party, last week President Obama declared the month of June 2015 “National Ocean Month,” punctuating this by stating that “no matter where you live or who you are, a healthy and thriving ocean is essential to all people, all year.”

I’m always a bit amused and bemused when we carve out a day to celebrate something so integrally woven into our lives; a single day in the year to honor and celebrate women, or fathers, or mothers… or the ocean. But I do like the elevation of the ocean to ever larger recognition in the pantheon of our considerations.

So hoist your glass to the sea and appreciate all she does to bring forth and sustain life on our planet – and a day when all people will be celebrating the ocean every day, all year!

Happy Ocean!

Governments and Militaries Are determined to destroy the ocean and every living thing in it. It has become the toilet for defunct satellites, war games, military sonar driving sea mammals crazy, beaching themselves to escape the unending noise And let’s not forget cruise ships and their noise and the waste they all dump at sea.
