On our most recent voyage, one high school senior shared that the experience inspired her to pursue a future in marine biology!
These moments stay with students long after they return to shore – sparking curiosity, awareness, and a lasting connection to the ocean through science in action.
For many, it’s their first time on a boat—listening to the hidden sounds of life beneath the waves, or peering through a microscope to see the translucent forms of drifting plankton. Crossing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge into the Pacific is a thrill – where porpoises glide through the water and a breaching whale might rise.
Exploring the ocean through sound, students lower hydrophones and tune into a world few people ever hear: the chorusing of croakers, the popping of snapping shrimp, and, if they’re lucky, the song of a humpback whale.
But along with these natural voices, they also hear the disruption. One student reflected,
“We dropped the hydrophone 50 feet down, but didn’t hear many animals—even though they said we usually should. That really stuck with me. It shows how much impact human noise has on the ocean.”
This Earth Month, we’re raising $7,000 to fund two full voyages and bring 60+ students to sea. Every $100 sponsors one student’s experience—and through April 30, all gifts are matched up to $5,000.
With your help, these students step into a world they’ve never seen or heard – and begin imagining their future in it…
We hope you’ll join us in sending these students to sea!
